関係代名詞thatは、人・物のどちらであってもこれを先行詞とすることができます。
ただし、thatの前には前置詞を置くことはできません。
また、関係代名詞thatは、次のような場合に優先的に用いられます。
（１）先行詞に最上級の形容詞がつく場合
This is the highest mountain that I have ever climbed.
「これは私が今まで登った中で最も高い山です。」
（２）先行詞に序数(the first,the second,the last等)やthe only,the very,the sameがつく場合
She is the only girl that could answer the question.
「彼女はその質問に答えた唯一の少女でした。」
（３）先行詞にall,every,any,much,little,few,noがつく場合
There is no mother that does not love her own child.
「自分の子を愛さない母親はいません。」
（４）先行詞が「人＋動物」または「人＋物」の場合
Look at the boy and the dog that are running over there.
「向こうを走っている少年と犬を見てごらんなさい。」
（５）疑問代名詞(Who, Which, What)で始まる文の場合
Who is that man that is reading a newspaper?
「新聞を読んでいるあの男性は誰ですか。」
